Sarah, Duchess of York visits Woking Hospice

Sarah, Duchess of York opens a new ward at Woking Hospice

Newpatient care facilities at Woking Hospice were officially opened by the Duchess of York on May 8.

Mayor of Woking, Councillor Peter Ankers and chairman of trustees David Perry, greeted the Duchess on her arrival, before she was given a guided tour of the new facilities.

She then took time to visit numerous patients on the ward, where she chatted with them and their families.

The Duchess then gave a short speech of praise before officially opening the much needed facilities.

Addressing the massed ranks of staff, patients and dignitaries, she said: “I want to thank everybody for coming today, it’s not just about the lovely nurses here, it’s about the ladies on reception the moment you come through the door as well. There is a friendly face and a loving and warm embrace everywhere you go, everyone gives so much.

"Most importantly, it doesn’t feel that anyone’s ill here. I think that’s a huge testimony to all of you. It’s about all of you joining forces to make people’s lives better. Well done and congratulations. I support you in every way and will continue to do so."

The Duchess then met more patients in day care where she was presented with a 'Budgie cake' handmade by Katy Duggan, 12. The cake was based on the Duchess' 'Budgie the Little Helicopter' books.

She also met three-year-old Matthew Cook, whose father is being cared for at the Hospice. Matthew was lucky enough to get to cut the Budgie cake and receive a book signed by the Duchess herself.

The visit from Sarah Ferguson was the result of a chance meeting with the hospice's major events manager, Sue Spencer. When Mrs Spencer told the Duchess about the Hospices fantastic work, she was determined to fit in a visit among her many other charity responsibilities.

Speaking after the visit, Mrs Spencer said: “We are so honored that the Duchess came to visit us and has offered her support for the future. This type of endorsement will help us with our fundraising activities and also help raise awareness of Woking Hospice and our work in the community.

"I know the patients were looking forward to the visit and her positive and bright personality has certainly lifted our day."
